Structural Integration (Rolfing®)

Reorganising the body for ease, balance and natural alignment

Structural Integration is a therapeutic approach that combines manual fascial work, movement education and refined body awareness. Its purpose is to help the body find a more effortless, upright and integrated relationship with gravity — so standing, walking and moving feel lighter and more coordinated. Internationally, this method is known as Rolfing®, named after its founder, Dr. Ida P. Rolf.

Fascia, gravity and the organisation of the body

At the heart of Structural Integration lies the interaction between fascia and gravity.

Fascia is an adaptable, three-dimensional network of connective tissue that surrounds and links muscles, bones, nerves and organs. It holds the body together, shapes its form and influences how movement flows from one region to another. Fascia responds continuously to habitual posture, emotional patterns, injuries and everyday stress. Over time, it can thicken, shorten, become glued down or lose elasticity.

When fascia loses its natural glide and adaptability, the body can lose balance:
  • Segments shift out of alignment,
  • Movement becomes less efficient,
  • Tension builds in certain areas,
  • Discomfort or pain may appear elsewhere in compensation.

Because the fascial network is continuous, local restrictions often affect distant regions — a foot issue can influence the pelvis, a tight jaw can impact the neck and shoulders, and so on.

Structural Integration works with the reality that gravity is always present. When the body is aligned in a way that uses gravity as support rather than resistance, movement requires less effort, posture feels natural, and the nervous system can settle.

How Structural Integration works

Structural Integration offers a combination of three complementary approaches:

1. Manual fascial work
Precise, intentional touch helps lengthen, soften and reorganise the fascia. This creates more space, elasticity and adaptability in the tissues, allowing the body to find a more balanced vertical alignment.

2. Functional movement education
Clients learn simple, sustainable patterns of movement — sitting, standing, walking, breathing — that support ease rather than reinforce old compensations. This work deepens body awareness and encourages efficient, intuitive motion.

3. Psychobiological awareness
Emotional patterns, thought habits and relational experiences are often reflected in the body’s structure. By recognising these connections, clients develop greater attunement and a more grounded relationship with themselves.

Together, these elements support real, lasting change — structurally and experientially.

What clients often experience

Structural Integration aims to create change that is both externally visible and internally felt.

Clients frequently report:
  • More upright, relaxed posture without trying,
  • Ease and lightness in standing and walking,
  • Improved mobility and flexibility,
  • Reduced tension in chronic areas like neck, back or jaw,
  • Better balance and coordination,
  • Increased sense of inner space, calm and presence.

As the body realigns, people often feel more at home in themselves — clearer, more grounded, and better supported in everyday life.

A process with continuity

Structural Integration is traditionally offered in a structured series of sessions, allowing the entire body to be addressed in a coherent, logical sequence. The work builds over time, with each session preparing and supporting the next. Clients often notice that the integrative effects continue to unfold even after the session is over.

Structural Integration for Children

Gentle Support for Growing Bodies

Children do not grow evenly. They grow in waves. Sometimes quickly, sometimes suddenly. Not every body adapts with ease.

As a therapist with extensive experience in structural bodywork, I work with children who experience discomfort during growth. This may include leg pain, tension, postural changes, coordination issues or a general sense of unease in their body. Very often, medical check-ups show nothing alarming. And yet, the child still feels pain or strain.

Structural Integration offers calm, professional and age-appropriate support during these demanding phases of growth. The work is gentle, respectful and adapted to the child’s nervous system. There is no force, no manipulation and no pressure.

The aim is not to correct the child, but to help their body organise itself more easily as it grows.

How Structural Integration Supports Children

Structural Integration works with fascia, posture and movement patterns. In children, this can help to:
  • Reduce tension caused by rapid growth
  • Improve body awareness and coordination
  • Support balanced posture
  • Ease recurring leg or joint discomfort
  • Help the nervous system settle and relax

Children often respond quickly. Not because something is fixed, but because the body finally feels supported instead of overloaded.

Who Can Benefit?

Structural Integration may be helpful if your child:
  • Experiences so-called growing pains
  • Grows very quickly and complains of leg or joint discomfort
  • Shows visible postural asymmetries
  • Is very active in sports and shows signs of overload
  • Struggles to relax, sleep or feel comfortable in their body
  • Has ongoing discomfort without a clear medical diagnosis

This work does not replace medical treatment. It can, however, be an excellent complementary approach when no pathology is found and symptoms persist.

My Approach

Sessions are calm, safe and fully adapted to the child’s age and personality. I explain what I do in simple language and always follow the child’s pace. Boundaries are respected at all times. Parents are welcome to stay present if the child prefers.

Many parents report:
  • Less pain in the evenings or at night
  • Freer, more coordinated movement
  • Improved posture
  • Calmer behaviour and better sleep

A Message to Parents

If your child is growing fast and complaining of pain, you are not overreacting. And your child is not imagining it. Growing bodies sometimes need extra support to adapt.

Structural Integration offers a professional, gentle and thoughtful way to support children through these phases, with respect for their body, their nervous system and their individuality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Structural Integration safe for children?

Yes. When properly adapted, Structural Integration is very safe for children. The work is gentle, non-invasive and adjusted to the child’s age, size and sensitivity.

Does it hurt?

No. Sessions are designed to be comfortable and calm. Children are never pushed into pain or discomfort.

How many sessions does a child need?

This varies. Some children benefit from just a few sessions during a growth phase. Others may need more regular support. This is always discussed individually.

Can this replace a doctor’s visit?

No. Structural Integration does not replace medical care. If symptoms are unclear or concerning, a medical evaluation should always come first. This work complements medical care.

What if my child does not want to be touched?

That is fully respected. Consent and comfort are essential. I always work at the child’s pace and within their boundaries.

Can parents stay during the session?

Yes. Many children feel more secure with a parent present, especially during the first sessions.

At what age can children start?

Children can benefit once they are able to communicate basic comfort and discomfort. This is typically from early school age.
